Boxes on the floor and the general sense of fire hazard is also an encouraging sign.

@maj I used to love the old Foyles flagship store in London, because it was made by knocking holes in walls between buildings. The maps were always amazing, and built from employee knowledge so you could navigate the crazy warrens. At some points they'd just have piles of books next to the steps between sections of the shop.

The modern rebuilt shop is clean and bright and airy and has an amazing collection, but it lacks some of the "I'm finding a secret treasure trove in Soho" charm of the old place.

@spacehobo I'm actually making a bookshop list for an upcoming trip to London! I'll add this one but know in my heart that I kissed out on that experience.
@maj Daunt Books is still charming, if absurdly posh. Cecil Court...same. There's a book barge on the Regent's Canal that's still pretty funky and cool.
