‘Fictional peoples and the dynamics of creation in J. R. R. Tolkien: imaginary peoples, languages and geography’,

Often presented as the epitome of fictional world creators, and the father of modern fantasy, famous for the coherence and verisimilitude of his “Middle-earth,” J. R. R. Tolkien used his philological background to weave the creation of peoples (Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, etc.), languages, and cultures into a history spanning thousands of years, marked by migrations, divisions, and interactions between communities and individuals. Drawing from The Silmarillion and the recently published The Nature of Middle-earth (2021), this article examines the different levels of representation of these fictional peoples, from individuals within their familial networks to the dynamic evolution of entire peoples, with a focus on the question of lineage, which may be seen as a metaphor for the birth of both the texts and the fictional world. https://www.fabula.org/colloques/document14660.php
