PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

@Mer__edith

Absolutely no offense meant, but maybe relying on Amazon (who are sort of antithetical to everything Signal stands for) for anything isn't the greatest of ideas?

@fedithom

Open Whisper Systems has a long history of being anti-decentralization

@Mer__edith

@yawnbox @fedithom @Mer__edith Why does signal then depend on a single centralized cloud provider?
@Mer__edith @yawnbox @fedithom then signal shouldn't be down just because AWS has a hiccup. Just speculating here, I know.
@xengi @Mer__edith @yawnbox @fedithom Please re-read the original post. Some users are having problems. Others (including me) are not. Signal as a whole isn't "down".
@xengi @Mer__edith @yawnbox @fedithom
Looks like Cloudflare is also having issues. And since internet = cloudflare, many services are down down down, not just signal.
@xengi @yawnbox @fedithom Maybe the AWS outage reveals a bug in a failover system. Neither of us knows what Signal's infrastructure is like, so let's stop speculating.

@Mer__edith
Signal server component does depend on AWS components eg. Dynamodb as is documented here: https://blog.iriyanto.com/self-deploy-the-latest-version-of-signal-server-v2025082200

@xengi @yawnbox @fedithom

@Mer__edith @xengi @yawnbox @fedithom better question would be: why does AWS east 1 outage affect EU Signal users…?
@root42 @Mer__edith @xengi @yawnbox @fedithom us-east-1 is the original AWS location and some "sources of truth" are there (IAM for example)
@yawnbox @fedithom @Mer__edith Keeping the service centralised (which can have some benefits when it comes to user experience) is a different story than having all your eggs in the same basket as half the internet.

@yawnbox

Kindly please don't rope me into a Signal-bash discussion. Thanks

@Mer__edith

@fedithom

blaming Signal for using Amazon isn’t?
