Since months, my laptopt was getting hot and spinning its fans.
The usual explanations kicked in: "It's old. It's a Macbool with an intel chip, known to overheat. Must be the new software running on old hardware."

Today I've finally thought for 5s to come up with the idea the the fans might be full of dust after 6 years.

Opened it up (still had a stupid pentalobe screwdriver somewhere), cleaned it out and now it's good as new :)

@instenauer @evelynefoerster Heh, looks like a miniature cotton candy machine. I should take a look inside my ‘backup’ i7 MBP one of these days

@instenauer

@vaughnsc says that now — but we all know “one of these days” means “sometime between the next solar eclipse and the heat death of the universe”. By then his backup Mac will have evolved its own biosphere and request a UN seat. 😜 😂

@evelynefoerster @instenauer Been there, done that. I used to do this for a living (Apple Certified Tech, so many, many moons ago).

It’s true it’s not high on my list of priorities. In fact, the last time that particular MBP acted up I happily paid someone else to ‘discipline it.’ I will take matters into my own hands if data is at risk, e.g.:

@vaughnsc @evelynefoerster Nice. It's so cool and empowering to do tinker with, modify, service etc. these "products" instead of just consuming them as the vendor "intended".
Inspiring post!

After I removed the dust I felt inspired and motivated and installed AeroSpace, a tiling window manager for macos.

Software can make such a difference as well in that regard!

@vaughnsc @evelynefoerster haha true!

I'm sure you'll know but just in case: When you wanna do it check ifixit.com for a manual.
Opening this thing was like solving one of those metal-puzzles / lock games....

including at one step having to pull full force. Oh and before that, if you lift it more than 2 cm you break the cover.
