Now THAT'S a headline

That’s what happens when Big Tech trap people in information silos and the media manufactures different fake realities depending on the bias of the particular billionaires who happens to own the outlets: people don’t share a common experience anymore and don’t have common facts to agree on. As a result, everybody has their own truths from their own information bubbles and nobody know the actual facts anymore.

I think blaming billionaires for this is incorrect. Look at Lemmy: this place is very much a silo. I’ve been actively participating here for over two years and in that time I have encountered one or two people who supported Trump (the ones posting in /conservative/ before it apparently got taken over). I routinely get called a fascist for being a mainstream Democrat. I’m not complaining (after all, I choose to be here rather than in a more comfortable silo) but clearly being a federated open-source non-profit isn’t solving the problem.

Some billionaires got rich by enabling people to join online silos, but those billionaires were doing what the people wanted already.

Idk, people here are definitely on average more sane than on mainstream platforms. This also isn’t to do with big tech or billionaires, it’s the fact that even knowing of Lemmy has a certain intellectual barrier that filters out the non-thinking masses.
There’s a filter but it’s not necessarily a “sanity” filter. People on here generally seem to put more effort into learning and understanding the causes that they support than the average person on Facebook does, but those causes themselves are often far out of the mainstream and people’s understanding of why someone might disagree with them in good faith is often rather poor.

That’s fair, still, I’d rather talk to “crazy” people who reasoned their way into than “normal” people who got there purely based on vibes.

I can relate a lot more to some guy who reasoned his way into being some horrific “millions must die” ubernazi than anyone who simps for optics like “muh past” or “old building good” or “muh nature” just because they “feel that way” and it’s “just” their “opinion” which is somehow a reason for believing in something rather than a description of belief.

I would hardly consider “one or two trump supporter in two years” a silo, like how many other people you encountered that were less extremists and more capable of dialogue?

Also, lemmy is not immune to tech propaganda, since it cannot be taken in isolation: people will still (albeit probably less intesively) biased by consuming other media, and being mostly a link aggregator rather than a generator of original content, there will still be some bias from the sources. It’s just a place where there’s no omnipotent algorithm so the problem is less grave, but still present.

This is from 2013. This has nothing to do with big tech, people are just stupid.
Eh, the rhetoric was still being pushed just in different ways.
Yes, but again - not by SM/apps/big tech, just by the establishment and grifters. Same as it always was with the press.
Because you think this is new?
Look at all this buzz about Gen z going right wing. They are still by and large left wing and yet the news won’t shut up about Tate or whatever
Social Media was a mistake.
I fear what the results form a survey in the US would find…
US public wrong about nearly everything and proud if it?
See they don’t have Fox News and same problems as the U.S.

Wow, if only there was an organization whose purpose was to inform the public about the current state of the world, maybe they could do something about it

If people would actually READ articles instead of just looking at the headline and pictures.

And if people would believe articles that do not reflect their view, then and only then, they could do that job

Corporate media, including “left leaning” and “progressive” outlets, routinely misleads people, especially around the listed issues of crime, public benefits, and immigration. Check out fair.org for tons of examples.
FAIR

FAIR is the national progressive media watchdog group, challenging corporate media bias, spin and misinformation.

FAIR
The BBC is a propaganda outlet meant to keep British society in line and and in check so the aristocracy can maintain their power.
LOL
Wanna let me in on the joke?
The BBC isn’t a propaganda platform?
the Sun does the same thing but also with a profit motive

Both have a profit motive, one simply earns actual capital that it’s owners (Murdoch etc.) exchange for political capital (favourable laws) and the other earns political capital (position promises, coverage opportunities, connections with assorted tory wankers), to exchange for actual capital (bonuses, cushy jobs).

Every system is corrupt.

In so far as beeb vs the sun hey are practically indistinguishable in terms of actual levels of bigotry, the actual tone is the only thing that sets it apart, but in terms of harm the Beeb takes the cake for me for being so transphobic one of their articles has a whole-ass Wikipedia page about it.

Then you have the frankly bizarre amount of sucking up to Rowling, Farage, et al. they do and now the coverage of the war in Gaza too.

The Sun is arguably more harmless because nobody really thinks it’s unbiased truth. But many people do see the Beeb that way and it hasn’t been so since the BoJo years at least when the new head got appointed, it’s just polite fox news now.

I can only assume in the intervening 13ish years, that the public are now wrong about everything.

British public wrong about nearly everything, survey shows | The Independent

Research shows public opinion often deviates from facts on key social issues including crime, benefit fraud and immigration

The Independent
Well they know about something that is 100% true: lizzy’s dead.

Americans are not any better. Poll from 2022 …yougov.com/…/41556-americans-misestimate-small-s…

From millionaires to Muslims, small subgroups of the population seem much larger to many Americans | YouGov

When it comes to estimating the size of demographic groups, Americans rarely get it right. In two recent YouGov polls, we asked respondents to guess the percentage (ranging from 0% to 100%) of American adults who are members of 43 different groups, including racial and religious groups, as well as other less frequently studied groups, such as pet owners and those who are left-handed.

Having interacted with the British public on a regular basis, I can confirm: they don’t know owt!
Are we living in a land where sex and horror are the new gods?

It’s crazy no one has mentioned Rupert Murdoch in relation to this. He owns 21st century fox in USA, New Corporation in Australia and News International in the UK. All Major publishing houses that own hundreds of papers and TV channels.

He is a evil man who uses his staggering media empire to control the opinions billions of people and has directly influenced many elections by pushing certain narratives.

As an Australian he is our greatest shame.

You just watched that new fern video too huh

No i don’t know who fern is. I’m from Australia, we’ve known about ok right wing Rupert for a long time.

I just saw a comment on here about how the UK doesn’t have Fox News and thought perhaps they don’t realise that it’s the same guy the whole way down

I, too, don’t know that fern video or what fern is. That said, yeah, I think anyone informed at all realize Murdoch is in the pantheon of comically evil real people who have lived. For those that don’t know, now you know.
I suppose it’s just a coincidence then, they make exceptional videos talking about all sorts of different things that happen, and just yesterday they released a whole video on the Murdoch family
The Battle for Fox

YouTube
Isn’t that what the series Succession was based on? I think that show does a great job in showing how billionaires control the narrative.

Can anyone explain to me how any of this is legal? These countries have governments that know about this, why don’t they do something about this?

I will never understand how a corrupt company that has Fox News can actively sue to be able to call itself a news organization while still continuing to lie, and it continuously lies lies lies. We know where the narratives.come from, we know whom controls it, and we haven’t done anything about this for decades and were still letting this happen

We allow fox News (and now oann and the others) to hide behind that first amendment but you can’t yell fire in a cinema and you shouldn’t be able to call yourself a news organization and them just lie and bias the fuck out of everything. News must be protected information. Journalists should be bound by oath to be truthful. News is too important

Because if you bring it up they’ll run smear after smear article about you until the gullible public believe you are bad and vote you out.

No one should have been allowed to consolidate that amount of power and unfortunately I can’t see them giving it up any time soon. I fear “democracy” is out of its depth.

3. Americans’ struggles with truth, accuracy and accountability

Many think America is experiencing a crisis in facts and truth, and they believe this problem ties into the current state of distrust people have in

Pew Research Center
Now do America

Oh fuck, the Republicunts will call it fake news and be like “NO I HEARD ONE NEWS STORY ABOUT AN IMMIGRANT MURDERING SOMEONE ONE TIME SO THEY’RE ALL MURDERERS AND THE STUDY IS FLAWED.”

In short, facts are not going to save us.

You could basically just remove the word “British” from the headline and it would still be accurate.
Well at least the British aren’t smarter than us Americans.
