My work on mainlining the #Unisoc UMS9230 SoC has reached a point where the usability of most features is limited by proprietary firmware blobs running on other processors (the camera being a notable exception). I am wondering whether it makes sense to write kernel drivers for them at all or if it is better to work on an open-source reimplementation of the firmware.

Thankfully, the #Jolla C2 provides the freedom to replace most of the coprocessor firmware. 1/4

@affe_null I think long term we'd benefit from writing open firmware for these devices, as we won't be dependent on the manufacturer for updates(which they'll discontinue in a few years anyway). Isn't the goal of postmarketOS and mobile Linux to keep these old devices supported for as long as possible? I think your open firmware would be a big step towards that. And thank you so much for your work on mobile Linux and hacking in general. I still remember using the terminal emulator app you made for KaiOS on my feature phone back in the day.
