After an inspiring conversation in the pub last night with someone half my age, who articulated how much social media has fucked up his generation, I just posted this rant over on X.

@frabcus I mean not that hot in that I 100% agree with you, she says on mastodon :P

I do think we need to be careful throwing baby out with bathwater. I really like what google+ did with circles and I think that # are a way we created same mech on twt back in the day.

That being said with dead internet ect... I do think we may want to put a bit more smarts in places use good tooling which sometime will include recco algos but I think bsky has good ideas on this in theory not in practice

@frabcus TLDR - Community is work, and if your not willing to put the work in or it is automated away it WILL decay
@kimau ha yes! I was more covering for my own normal people pleasing. Reached the point of not tiptoeing around it any more!
@kimau yep! I'm hoping Bluesky gets properly distributed for some competition! I miss the late 90s era when sites played with different moderation and distribution algorithms. Was so creative (Advogato and so on)

@frabcus Like it or not its not the 90s anymore you need to be compliant data controller and all that overhead. You need to encrypt by default and now you need a trench to defend against scrapers and slop gen.

Though the good news is the tools that might doom us also might save us when used correctly. The ability to process text and have auto captioning ect... even with tiny models opens up whole new avenues.

Hard to find decent convo about this and I'm more worried about pol than tech atm

@kimau gotcha! I haven't followed how those changes are impacting eg Mastodon instance hosts
@frabcus short version is you go private, login only or your server bills shoot up. Also you got to be careful with federation.
90s internet bloomed because we trusted everything and hoping that we can find easier way for that layer of stuff because there is too much effort on indie web
See http://indieweb.org/
IndieWeb

The IndieWeb is a people-focused alternative to the “corporate web”.

@kimau gotcha, thanks!

Also lovely to hear from you - how is your game going?

@frabcus Hahaha 🤣

TLDR been on a 7day week grind bed code bed since 1st Sep. It is that final push should have already been out but we are close. That trademark thing hit us right in the face
Before you continue to YouTube

@kimau that is quite a thing to happen that late!

hope you're happy with the new name you've found!!
