The names of 72 female scientists are soon to be inscribed on the Eiffel Tower in a gesture to promote gender equality.

For the first time since 1889, the City of Paris is honouring great scientists by inscribing the names of these 72 women on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, alongside the 72 scientists originally chosen by Gustave Eiffel, who were all men.

@cmconseils may I guess France didn't have female scientists in 1889 yet, because conservatism?
@Helgi because patriarchy
@cmconseils maybe because the type of education, like Smolny institution for noble lass had classes of mostly arts, geography, maths, languages and cooking. So the result would be some Ukrainian speaking noble Marie Bashkirtseff from Bashkortostan who could also paint stuff in Paris. Maybe she also spoke English. But those days nobles preferred French.
