Hank Green's vlogs this year just constantly have me imagining how much of a difference it could make if he was to set up a PeerTube instance. He just posted one today that argues:
- The structure of the internet* today does more harm than good
- These systems are integral to so many people's ways of life
- We need to design systems that take our agency back
- This is tied to larger problems rooted in oligarchy
PeerTube materially returns agency to the content creator and even the viewer themself, and takes power away from oligarchs. The biggest barrier that I face as someone who wants to make larger use of it is the lack of viewership. This is a rare occasion when the "rising tide that lifts all boats" would actually be a reality. We need popular creators to set up PeerTube accounts.
It's trivially easy to set up a PeerTube account that mirrors a YouTube or Tiktok account. Nobody has to totally pivot their workflow in order to achieve this, and yet doing so could make a huge difference to the structure of the internet itself.
