looking for resources to learn font engineering; does anyone have recommendations? particularly for someone with only a tiny bit of coding knowledge
currently i can get about as far as running a file through the online version of fontbakery and fixing most of the issues it finds by googling the error messages, but i would love to feel more confident in understanding what i am doing and why
@elliscarsonjones That’s not a bad start, I guess!
It’s a field that isn’t strictly defined. So yes, why not learn step by step how to produce fonts that pass the most important tests of fontbakery/fontspector‽
There are quite some good resources online, like @justinpenner’s https://typedesignresources.com/#font-engineering and @rosaliewagner’s https://rosaliewagner.com/type-links/
And whenever you have a specific question, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!

Everything from learning the basics to running your own foundry.

@elliscarsonjones by the way, in many cases, the errors listed by fontbakery provide a link to a discussion where the decision was made regarding why the check exists (and any arguments around it), which can be very informative.
