I will never stop being irritated by devices that use a USB-C connector for their power input but that just require 5V without negotiating (and so are only useable with a USB-A power supply).
This seems to be a consequence of EU and Chinese initiatives to standardize on USB-C for mobile device power, with cheapskate vendors “complying” by simply swapping in USB-C connectors for micro-USB without changing the electronics.
An even more broken version of this, which I’ve encountered occasionally, is USB-C devices that not only require a USB-A power source, but also only work if the USB-C connector is inserted one of the two possible ways.

@mattblaze that one is the worst.

I half expect to find a USB-C adapter glued into a micro USB port inside the device.

Helps remind me that no matter how bad software is, hardware is always worse. 😂

@mattblaze USB-C devices that can’t negotiate 5V with modern C to C chargers infuriate me, but I have yet to encounter directional USB-C ports.

Absolutely diabolical.

@Buugman @mattblaze it is also possible make a device enumerate differently depending on which way up the connector is inserted, if you really want fun and games

Hi Satan, nice to meet you. Big fan.

@mattblaze I remember the first Raspberry Pi with USB-C messed up the sense resistor wiring and it wouldn't work with power supplies that actually followed the spec.
@mattblaze Pointing at you, maker of Miffy night light. Like parents of toddlers were not stressed enough already…
@mattblaze I have a portable monitor with two USB-C ports, that handles USB-PD just fine on either port with either orientation, but for whichever port is connected to the computer, video only shows up in one orientation. So it's not a strict subset.
@mattblaze I have a speaker that's USB-C power for recharging. Came with C-A cable. *only* charges with that specific cable. Other C-A ones do not work. A Tribit if I recall right.
@cricalix
They are selling USB audio amps that use a USB-C shaped 5V port for power and a dedicated USB-B for audio. You really can't make this up!
@mattblaze
#USBC #USBPD
@mattblaze there's also the cursed variant that uses a usb-c connector, but expects 12v, doesn't support any usb power delivery so can't negotiate the 12v, so only works with a 12v DC wall wart with a usb-c connector on the output...

@quixoticgeek @mattblaze

Wow, that's a surprise electronics to brick converter you've got there!

@mattblaze which gave rise to adapters you can insert, which just have the two resistors and short the required power wires to make it orientation agnostic…
They work, but I loathe that they are necessary to exist.
