Pop-up Amazon TV ads despite charging people monthly fees for their ad-free plan.

Amazon: "Oh, we didn’t mean those ads. That’s clearly stated on page 112 of the user agreement under “Enshittification.”

In the advertising world, it’s not advertising, it’s a promotion

For example, if you go to the grocery store, there is a difference between hearing/seeing something that says, “bananas are on special today” vs “go buy [specific brand] of cereal today!”

still sucks though

Gotta call BS. I didn’t go anywhere and happen across a promotion, Amazon pushed this ad into my home, despite charging me a monthly fee not to do so. Why not go all the way and call it a public service announcement?

This is just like cold calls from local contracting companies claiming that they aren’t violating the “Do Not Call” list because they aren’t actually selling new windows, just informing the public of their new promotion.

You can call “bs” all you want, but you’re yelling at the messenger. If I understand the situation correctly, you’re using an Amazon service, so Amazon promoting Amazon stuff on that service might count as self-promotion (or whatever the term is) rather than advertisement. The difference being that they’re not being paid by somebody to promote their thing, and just calling out their own services/events.

Note that I’m also not supporting this, I don’t like it, but I’m also not surprised if that’s how that works, and that Amazon would be using it this way.

They may have a specific corpo-speak word for it that they have codified into law with liberal applications of money… but in effect it is still advertising.

Arguing the etymology is like a child abuser arguing the difference between pedophilia and ephebophilia. At the end of the day, they’re still a child abuser, no matter how they define it.

Then cancel your amazon…

I’m just telling you how the world works and why what you’re seeing still counts as “ad-free”

i agree it sucks. So cancel your sucky service and don’t try to paint me as a child abuse apologist

You’re trying to excuse apologist language. Telling me to define the world by their terms, not how the world is. If you want to accept that their way is the right way, that’s on you. But when you tell others, that’s just spreading their propaganda.

According to you an ad is not an ad when you or Amazon use the word “promotion”.

I’m curious, in your opinion when does something like this become an ad? Is it an ad if they they pop it up mid-show every hour? No? How about every 10 minutes, is it an ad then?

Marketing departments attempt to bend reality and public opinion to benefit their company. Their efforts have obviously been effective with at least one commenter on Lemmy.

If you’re getting paid to promote someone else’s shit, it’s an ad…

If you’re promoting something related to your own businss on your own propery and not getting paid by an external party, it’s probably not an ad…

When you use an app from big tech, you’re on their property. They can display whatever they want on their app. They can promise “ad-free” and break that promise if they want… or in this case, most people will agree it’s not an ad

Again, my explanation of our enshittified reality is not an endorsement… hence i choose to avoid big tech where i can and opt for free software.

I welcome you to do the same instead of demanding that amazon follow your view of the world

Well folks, the brainwashing’s complete on this one.
Nah, they’re promoting their retail business on their streaming platform. Not the same thing.
Promotions are a form of advertising. Just because they have the excuse that it’s advertising on their own service doesn’t make it not advertising.
Hm seems to be missing the “Fuck off” button

That can be found right here:

Amazon Sign-In

So you upgraded to an ad-free plan and they still show this?
Yup.
Wow. Makes me want to cancel them twice.

Paramount does this shit too.

If you have Ad Free Paramount+ you get 30s intro ads where you have to hit the >> or OK button to make it go away.

The “previews” are standard fare across most streaming apps and it drives me absolutely crazy.
Jesus, stop it, I can only get that happy that I am streaming owned movies in high Bitrate from my nas without breaks or stuff like that.
at least you can skip them
I remember a time when Hulu was free and without ads. Then it was not free with ads. First was never gonna last, but the route they took to get where they are NOW was absolutely stupid as fuck.
isn’t Hulu shutting down

Oh so it is. I hadnt heard this news until just now looking up what you’re talking about.

points at Hulu Ha ha!

I am so angry about this. I generally like Hulu, I hate Disney+.
I’d have liked Hulu a lot more if it weren’t geo-restricted to the US.

God damn it. I knew Disney getting into the streaming biz was going to suck balls. I was already pissed off when they pulled their content to form their own service.

Well, guess I’ll be watching more anime. Only got Crunchyroll left. And I’m not sure how long that’s gonna last either. They are making stupid choices as well.

It isn’t shutting down, it is just being folded into Disney+. You can still get a standalone Hulu subscription but as of sometimenext year will only be accessible through the the Disney+ app.
So back to cable packages. Fucking dumb
Is Disney shutting down Hulu? Here’s what we know about a major streaming update

Hulu will become the new brand for Disney overseas, according tio an announcement. Here in the states, changes are coming to Disney+.

USA TODAY
I’m pretty sure it was never free and without ads. There were much fewer and even sometimes would have really quick “thanks for watching now get back to the show” ads but ad free has always been paid
It was only ad free for like a year, if that. I originally thought it was a piracy site when I first found it.
Pretty confident you’re wearing rose tinted glasses. They had very few ads in the beginning. you could get through multiple episodes without getting them but they definitely existed. Maybe you had an ad blocker? I literally can’t find any evidence it was ever both and I was using it within the first few months of it’s public release
Sounds like you’re ready to stop buying anything from Amazon. One of us. One of us…
the only thing that I think that you can do about it is cancel and not use the service.
Cough cough fmhy cough cough
Bezos has enough money
then you start your ad-free viewing by selecting a show… and they show you an ad for a different show. this aggravated me more than the ads on the page shown there.

This is the same as all the games that advertise themselves as having no ads but they do have ads for in app purchases.

For some reason they don’t consider those as being ads.

Options are “close” and “close and give us even more data”

Interesting

don’t forget “close and give misleading data”
You better sail the high seas and watch your shows Amazon-free.

The parasite only understand a one language...

Deny it prodit and engagement.

If you are using these normie services, you are the problem.

They treat you like cattle, do something

I left when they started charging more so they wouldn’t ruin your service with ads… which they did anyway
ReVanced, SmartTubeNext, a Fen Lite build of Kodi, and Real-Debrid. You’ll never sit through any adverts ever again.
I’m sorry but if i pay for a service that’s ad free and they put ads in the media i’m watching then i will instantly cancel that service. Anyone who doesn’t is just enabling that behavior.
I’ve graduated to not considering any service they has an advertising tier. It’s like being in the court watching Gríma Wormtongue whisper into the ear of King Théoden of Rohan. No amount of concessions is good enough, they’ll always ask for more.
Happened to me with HBO Nordic. I mean HBO Max. No. Max. It was an episode of Rick and Morty, and the ad was on the video itself. It was like it was downloaded from somewhere. Cancelled in an instant.
upgrade to piracy. its free and ad-free.
While I don’t personally engage in piracy, I can definitely see why people go that route. Streaming services suck so much. All these companies had to do was make it more convenient to not pirate.
there’s a reason why video game and music piracy has had a dramatic reduction, and why tv/movies still have a significant number of pirates.
There’s definitely something in their terms of service that says the ad-free doesn’t apply to their products.
That would be an instant unsubscribe from me. Otherwise you’re just giving them permission to keep doing this.
Prime streaming is shit. The only reason I have prime video is because I use the free delivery. I never watch it

Ad-blockers are a must

The only time I see ads are when I’m streaming something live. And that’s because they have actual commercial breaks

have you unsubscribed?
Last week I canceled HBO. They increased prices and if I did not want that, I’d have to watch ads. I’m not watching ads. And they did not provide enough value to increase the price. Vote with your wallet. I certainly do.
