Great news! We are releasing the first demo of our new free satellite map data. It's still a work in progress, but you can help us cover more countries.

@VersaTiles are you aware of https://osmlab.github.io/editor-layer-index/? It's a similar project that collects orthophotos and other map services worldwide. The ones with category:photo (and maybe historicphoto) are probably of interest for this project.

@VersaTiles PS: I dislike the term "satellite images" for images that were not taken from satellites. Google uses this term, but it is confusing and contributes to people believing these kinds of photos are taken from space.
High quality orthophotos are usually taken from aircraft.

"Aerial imagery", "Earth view", "Photo view" or the likes are probably a more fitting term.

@jomo I see it exactly the same way as you do. From a technical perspective, you are absolutely right.
However, I have discussed VersaTiles with many users, including developers who don't work closely with map data. Most of them don't understand the technical processes or terminology. This means that every technical term leads to a new side discussion.
@jomo I therefore use the correct terminology internally, for example in the code and documentation, and on GitHub, but use more common descriptions publicly, for example on social media.
Does this make sense?
@VersaTiles IMHO not, as my argument is that particularly the public facing terms should not be misleading. I know that people commonly call these images satellite images because they *think* they're shot from satellites, making this a common, but wrong, description. I believe that this wrong description should not be upheld and further contributed to, as better descriptions are possible.
@VersaTiles I've spoken to several people who were surprised that so-called "satellite images" were shot from airplanes. And they only believed they were shot from satellites because Google Maps and others called them satellite images.
@jomo @VersaTiles blue marble and the sentinel2 images come from satellites. the term "satellite images" is not used. "orthophotos" is the fifth word on the site.
@yetzt @VersaTiles I know the demo page mentions that, but that text won't be shown in any product and the thing is called "VersaTiles Satellite".

@yetzt @VersaTiles I think you're missing my point, which is about end user facing terms, not what developers call it. The OP has a preview image that says "VersaTiles Satellite", the page title is "VersaTiles Satellite Demo" and the page description is "Try the beta version of our free satellite map tiles".

It does not say "Satellite images" anywhere, but my point (which is about "satellites", not "images") still stands. Hope this makes it clear?

@jomo @VersaTiles i understand your point, but i think you are barking up the wrong tree.
