Germany remembers that Stasi was a bad idea, where as certain other countries' governments arecall "let's try that again, but with modern CCP-inspired surveilance technology".

Unfortunately it's not that simple. Even in Germany - and especially with the current conservative government - there are many who are lobbying *for* more surveillance and it's a constant struggle to keep them at bay.
