I gotta admit, I am loving how little of the conversation is just "BlueSky bad! Mastodon good! 🤡" and how much of it is "BlueSky is not ideal for Black users, but let's be for real, neither is Mastodon. We don't have control over BlueSky, but we do have some agency with Mastodon. How can we make Mastodon better? Where are we with improving the issues that make this place unwelcoming for Black users? Clearly, more Black users chose BlueSky than Mastodon. Have we addressed the reasons why?" ♥️🥹

Seriously, I count ~5 conversations in the improvement framing direction. I love to see it! Shame on me for having lower expectations.

I'm unapologetically backing improvements across ActivityPub and ATProto. I back Hachyderm/Mastodon and BlackSky. You can just back both teams! Nothing in the rules says you can't do that!

a place uncomfortable for black people? on the fediverse i have never been in touch with a topic related to the skin color of somebody. to me - it simply does not exist. which is nice! …while in x, insta and probably all other centralized/directed/biased social media apps it is all about armageddon… seems the techelite wants to push the world into chaos. as they consider crises as a good business model to become richer
@frocksupreme hi! How nice for you that you haven't had to deal with this before. Have you considered that others may have different experiences? You might want to read up on this stuff—perhaps helpful: https://www.forbes.com/sites/danabrownlee/2022/06/19/dear-white-people-when-you-say-you-dont-see-color-this-is-what-we-really-hear/
Dear White People: When You Say You ‘Don’t See Color,’ This Is What We Really Hear

If you've ever uttered the phrase, "I don't see color," think again. That phrase is one of the least productive phrases in the anti-racism struggle. When Black and Brown people hear this tired refrain, this is what we're thinking.

@dingemansemark i read it. it has nothing to do with decetralized social media. so no reason to bring this point up at this thread. simply different topic
@frocksupreme @dingemansemark umm, you see how incredibly tone deaf that sounds, right? this is not about the technological merits of social media, it's about why mastodon has a racism problem and how we can fix it, at least to the degree that we can create technical solutions to social problems. Yes, bluesky is more centralised than mastodon, see the ability of bluesky the company to ban someone from blacksky, see the offloadable moderation and labeling system, the recent controversy that started this whole thing, etc. However, there are things that we can do to mitigate racism, as well as other similar hate views, like queerfobia, ableism and so on. Many people would say we can't do much about any of that, because of the decentralisation, and for that, spamd and email filters from the 90s want to say hello. So yeah, it's not simple at all, it takes a big amount of thinking about the problem to create a powerful solution which preserves the spirit of the fedi, but many people especially from mastodon are either too afraid to do anything so they do nothing at all in hopes to not upset anyone, or they are too concerned about numbers going up and flashy designs than trying to make people feel truely welcome here. I'm not sure which is worse, but either of those views perpetuate harm, in ways the perpetrators don't know, or don't care, about.
@esoteric_programmer @dingemansemark mastodon has no racism
problem. maybe you have
@frocksupreme @dingemansemark just because you don't see it, because it's not in your immediate circle of followers, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
@esoteric_programmer @dingemansemark i do not live in the racism bubble. therefore it does not exist to me. and any other person could do the same. then it will be gone for everybody! wouldnt this be nice? just go after nice other topics! start today and be a part of this new movement. make social media great. mastodon can. because there is no team behind biasing opinions and sending you threads into your timeline which you dont want to see…
@frocksupreme @dingemansemark ok, well then...I think the time for arguing in good faith has passed. Ignoring something doesn't make it go away, as you very well know, but because you almost said maga in that post, I know what will happen next. What will happen next is simple, actually, it's me pressing a button. So, take the block, and good day to you!
