We have the worst of all possible worlds. We came so tantalisingly close to obliterating the Tory party, and might have gotten there if not for a few spoiler efforts in the final leg of the election campaign.

Had we done so, I believe there'd have been a genuine movement to rebuild the normal right.

Instead we left a broken and mangled monster to fester absent the moderate voices that kept these insane far right populists in check.

I didn’t think I’d ever say this: let’s hope the Tory party can be saved

Britain badly needs a grownup party of the centre right. It won’t come from Badenoch – it may come from a new generation of one-nationers, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

In that vein, I agree with Toynbee. We need the Tory party to save itself from the likes of Badenoch and Jenrick.

We need a normal right wing party that can demonstrate to right wing voters why Reform is an extremely bad thing for our politics and our country.

When the history of this period gets written I am certain that Brexit and Boris Johnson's populism will be highlighted as the main causes of our stormy present — but Sunak's disastrous election leading into Kemi's lurch into far right populism will certainly be a prominent footnote, if only for surrendering the country to Reform.
