Hi to all, I updated the page about the #RevoxB77 mk II on my home site. I studyed the effect of the popular mod that consists in replacing the original fixed roller on the right tape guide with a ball bearing. The results seem marginally better with the original factory configuration, though.

I checked the azimuth with the same 16kHz signal and the oscilloscope and the phases are rock solid with the fixed roller rather the ball bearing in the left tape guide. That is a clear win for the factory configuration. #RevoxB77 #AnalogAudio #MagneticRecording #ReelToReel #HiFi #Tape

@davbucci what about needle bearings? I am unsure how they might fare but has it been tried?

@the_turtle it may be an idea, however I don’t know if the benefit comes from a slightly increased friction that somehow dampens the small variations of speed more than the bearing.
