Iconic photographs in the digital age:
A study of 940,000 online circulations shows that memes and remixes do not erase meaning but create “ebbs and flows” of relevance. Iconic images live on through chains (e.g. Napalm Girl → Alan Kurdi) and coexist between politics and commodification.
