We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. https://signal.org/blog/pdfs/germany-chat-control.pdf
@signalapp if chat control happens, what’s the alternative?
Threema and 24/7 vpn? Sounds like we are going to be like china.
@gaufff @signalapp @delta as for my understanding, all those apps will be blocked on app stores or they need to comply with the chat control law, so how would this help? Or am I wrong?
@randy_ @gaufff @signalapp the precise legal repercussions and steps how some chat control could be implemented, are guess work. It's a technical quagmire even if players collaborate which we are pretty sure signal and delta chat will not, and rather pull out if it comes to it. At the current moment it's about preventing chatcontrol wholesale because it is an exceptionally bad idea that does not help to protect children or get them out of abuse situations.

Civilization’s algorithm is simple:

centralization tightens; we merely pick a softer prison.

To attempt the impossible is the last chivalry.

@delta @randy_ @gaufff @signalapp it's also so blatantly illegal and unconstotutional that I'd consider non-compliance an act of duty as per Germany's constitution and not a matter of opinion!
@randy_ @gaufff @signalapp @delta side loading. Or not using ios and android. See grapheneos for example (from which this message was sent)

@randy_ @gaufff @signalapp @delta On Android, if they are blocked from app stores and Google proceeds to limit sideloading from inside the OS to "approved" apps you will still be able to sideload via ADB. Also note that at least 3ed party app stores not hosted in the EU will likely refuse to comply. More might move rather than comply.

Protest groups however might find themselves having to have their one hacker install Signal via ADB for everyone in the crew if this happens. Some don't have a computer and some have never used the command line before.
