The Daleks were essential to Doctor Who becoming a television phenomenon 🤔

@HannahHowe Ummm… that's a debate? Or am I missing some context?
@clonezone Without the Daleks, Doctor Who would have become a popular television series. With the Daleks, it became a phenomenon. True or false?

@HannahHowe I don't know about the first part. One of those counterfactuals that historians have problems with.

But the Daleks did happen and they were a phenomenon. Accepted wisdom within the Whovians.

@HannahHowe For nuance:

As I understand it, being born a full 13 years after Dalekmania, it was a real crossover phenomenon where for a brief moment it overshadowed the source material? So yes, it boosted Doctor Who in that it placed the show in the wider public consciousness.

But what made Doctor Who a *TV phenomenon* was strong stories, reinvention, and a steady flow of new monsters of the week that ensured the show's longevity and eventual revival. @clonezone
