It's hard to explain the subtelties of translation to monolingual people. I actually hard a few people on a podcast discussing game localisation who were unironically talking about how some translation was not "correct", and somehow believed that there is a platonic accurate translation and then there are the translators doing their own things.

Jon Wood@glyph @PastaThief someone was in our local paper for that sort of thing. She broke into an ex’s flat, stole all his lightbulbs, then called him from his own phone to let him know. Truly unhinged behaviour which would put you off crossing someone.

MrC@PastaThief If I had a dollar every time somebody accused a translator/localizer of "censorship" because they did a contextually accurate translation of "kuso" and didn't just use "shit", I'd be rich. They'll never realized that a professional translator with years of cultural exposure and experience does do it better than google translate and your friend with one year of Japanese in college.

@sinvega It certainly takes a lot more work and seems designed to cause maximum annoyance. Also it involves going into the person's home, which kind of implies tht you have access to their home.
