Good morning folks

I have someone in my reddit inbox trying to tell me that 'tiered rewards' on kickstarters were the same problem vector as stretch goals.

*leans in to camera*

They're talking utter shit.

I mean, they're also trying to say that 'a couple of years' was 'a period so brief it's not worth worrying about'

**hard stare**

Anyway, turns out the earliest links I have to kickstarter in my gmail are from like... 2011, so holy shit, has it been a fuckin' WHILE
Anyway, time for my 'every few years' check on what the fuck happened with various projects I backed.

On one hand, turns out a bunch of em finally finished.

On the other hand, the dropbox links are dead.

Oops.

I do *miss* having stuff like kickstarter campaigns to look forward to, I'll admit.
Throwback to early 2010s when loot boxes, kickstarters, etc would give you a bunch of entertainment from either getting shit, or the drama from not getting shit

> It’s wild how many companies try to hide behind ‘pre-order’ language when in reality they’re just using new orders to fund current production

Why, yes, that's exactly how pre-orders work.

@DarkestKale On Kickstarter they're often funding the previous campaign's unforeseen expenses…

@RogerBW Once upon a time, I used to point out that KS had a *mandatory* 'risks' section, and it was Caveat emptor for anyone to, you know... read that.

If a campaign has 'nah, we're good' in that section, you are IN FOR A RIDE

@RogerBW but, there was also a time when KS/crowdfunding was 'I hope we can make X' and then became 'this is a pre-order for X~!' and those are two wildly different things, and people stopped a mentality to suit.
@DarkestKale Roughly every campaign now says "all the design is done, we're just raising money for production". Then mysteriously once the campaign is over oh, we just need to redesign this and this…
@RogerBW ah, the lies on lies technique
@DarkestKale Briefly they had a rule that you couldn't start a new campaign while the old one wasn't complete (I got at least one campaign pulled because of that), but the big guys complained and that's gone away again now.

@RogerBW KS always had that sleazy behind the scenes feel, to me.

... just that kinda 'wellllll, if we police things properly, we won't have anyone, SOOOOO...' vibe
