Been following the BSD conferences for a while and have not yet had the chance to attend one. But what i have noticed from all the videos and photo's published on social media is that it seems to be a male ( I'm going to include NB folk here too ) dominated event ? Maybe I'm wrong and it's just how the media published distorts the reality ? Apologies if I have offended anyone it certainly isn't my intention.

@justine

@DianeBruce could also speak to this. I know I've seen her at just about every bsd conference that I've been to.

BSDCan is better in this regard, but yes.

@mwl @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce I like to think we have squashed the… detractions, to put it politely, and creates a safe, welcoming environment. Please do not hesitate to report issues and suggest ways we can improve.

Indeed our woman keynoter pointed out that we are lacking diversity…

…and, well, um, how about we start with having a woman keynoter, as I believe Coimbra and Dublin Euros had too.

PLEASE SUBMIT TALK PROPOSALS TO EVENTS WHERE YOU WANT TO SEE PEOPLE THAT LOOK LIKE YOU AT.

❤️ Something something this one simple trick! ❤️

@dexter @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce

Many folks feel they need to attend a con before they'll submit to a con. *Technically* not true, but it takes a certain amount of confidence to submit without knowing the event.

BSDCan's papers committee is 3/8 women, fwiw.

@mwl @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce 100% true, but attendees don’t appear on the schedule… and something something privacy in photos and “don’t draw undesired attention to individuals” and sigh, it’s a multidimensional challenge.

Your suggestions please!

Magic wands especially!

@mwl @dexter @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce people here are quite welcoming..it was scary as hell for me when i submitted a talk to eurobsdcon 2018 without knowing anybody there, but people really did their best to make me feel welcome
@albert @mwl @dexter @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce Also, a really important note to add: you can submit a talk even if you are not an expert! The talk on the IPv6 Homerouter challenge is one of these examples: the author showed his mistakes and failures, and it was good to see!

@vinishor @albert @mwl @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce I would argue that you do need to be a expert, but an expert in your own, unique experiences. From that perspective, a few hundred people (plus the stream audience) get to learn about topics they know little about.

Older siblings come to mind, they’re “not parents” but they are generally more experienced than new parents.

Think about what your strongest experiences, ergo expertise are.

Along the lines of, “I don’t know anything about programming… I’ve only managed programmers for a decade.”

(Yes. We want to hear about that second part. We have plenty of the first part.)

@dexter @vinishor @mwl @encthenet @justine @DianeBruce imho it denpends on the defininition of expert. But one definitly you don't need to know everything...nobody does, so if one has to say "sorry, i don't know" to a specific question that is definitly ok
