they cannot be true Christians. One of the central messages of the New Testament is: “But I say to you: turn the other cheek.” With these words, Jesus Christ – whom Christians claim to follow – directly developed the Old Testament further, which had at least introduced the principle of “an eye for an eye” to put an end to the endless spiral of blood vengeance.

What we are currently witnessing in Trump’s America not only falls short of Jesus’ message, it even falls behind the civilizational progress of the Old Testament. Those who preach or practice violence, revenge, and retribution may call themselves “Christian” – but there is nothing Christian about it.

es können keine echten Christ.innen sein. Eine der zentralen Botschaften des Neuen Testaments lautet: „Ich aber sage euch: Haltet die andere Wange hin.“ Mit diesen Worten hat Jesus Christus – auf den sich Christ.innen berufen – direkt das Alte Testament weiterentwickelt, das immerhin schon den Grundsatz „Auge um Auge“ formulierte, um der endlosen Spirale der Blutrache ein Ende zu setzen.

Was wir derzeit im trump’schen Amerika sehen, fällt nicht nur hinter die Botschaft Jesu zurück, sondern sogar hinter den zivilisatorischen Fortschritt des Alten Testaments. Wer Gewalt, Rache und Vergeltung predigt oder praktiziert, mag sich selbst „christlich“ nennen – christlich ist das nicht. (2/2)
