More than 1.6m sign petition opposing Starmer’s plan for digital ID cards - Lemmy.ca

How does a homeless person without a smartphone get a job? Is the government going to supply smartphones to everyone?

Or anyone who simply doesn’t want a smartphone. How do they get a job? Are you now forced to use a smartphone if you want to be a UK citizen?

The government has said it wants to ensure the scheme works for those who are not able to use a smartphone and will launch a consultation on how the service will be delivered later this year.

The new digital ID will be held on people’s phones, in a similar way to contactless payment cards or the NHS app.

Yeah, they have no clue what they’re doing. Maybe do the consultations and research before announcing your plan?

New digital ID will be mandatory to work in the UK

PM says the scheme will make it harder to work illegally but opposition parties argue it won't stop small boat crossings.

BBC News
This is the only thing giving me hope about the whole scheme-there seems to be nothing more than a headline or soundbite with no thought or infrastructure planning behind it.

Unfortunately the main negative of this,

Is while smartphones make it easy to display. The data will be with the government. So not having a smart phone is easy to get around. Companies will likely be able to access the database and see your data.

UK unemployed having to pay for new gov ID to get a job. Is the real fucker.

Could the same people also start and sign a petition to introduce a wealth tax and remove the income tax?
Ok now you KNOW they won’t accept that one
Can't hurt to try and get some people to talk about it.
Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards

We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards. There are reports that this is being looked at.

Petitions - UK Government and Parliament
Has anyone ever seen one where the answer wasn’t no?
Archived Petition: Make verified ID a requirement for opening a social media account.

Make it a legal requirement when opening a new social media account, to provide a verified form of ID. Where the account belongs to a person under the age of 18 verify the account with the ID of a parent/guardian, to prevent anonymised harmful activity, providing traceability if an offence occurs.

Damn, the only successful petition is one that furthers the government’s surveillance goals.
I’d love to see a “Get rid of the petitions system, its sole purpose is to make people feel they have been listened to while you continue to ignore them” petition get enough votes to be debated.
Just past 2 million now
I signed this 12 hours ago and still have not had the confirmation email… so I suspect there are many more signatures to come, and it’s over 2mil now

It’s 2.26M now.

Which, assuming it’s all valid UK citizens signing, is approaching 5% of the adults registered to vote (48M), and not far off 8% of those that voted last year (29M). It’s all people who are politically active enough to sign a petition after all.

How can they think it’s a winning move?

How can they think it’s a winning move?

Didn’t the brexit one get something like 5 million votes?

Yes, but that was part of the Tory election manifesto, so no petition was going to outweigh that one.

Brexit… Winning…

Do you see my problem with your observation?

Stop asking and start demanding.

The petition is titled “Do not introduce Digital ID cards”

Sounds like a demand to me.

If that makes you feel better
