The skies here suffer from heavy light pollution, like in most cities. This was a 15-second test exposure of the Big Dipper at ISO 100, cropped and heavily filtered in Darktable to remove haze and bring the stars out. I just wanted to see if I could get anything at all, and was surprised how many stars became visible – the constellation is almost hard to spot now! If I'm not mistaken, the North Star is also visible to the top right of the picture.

You can see Mizar and Alcor. A good eye test - in this case, a lens test. 🙂
Hah, I didn't know about them, so I first thought it was lens flare or some other fault when I was developing the photo. Fascinating, and good to know they're supposed to be like that!
Yes, north star and the other stars from ursa minor are visible near the top of the image.
Beautiful! The stars are quite impossible to see here in Chicago; luckily my parents and in-laws both live in much better viewing conditions and I always look forward to visiting them...
Coming back to a darker and richer sky is one of my favourite parts of visiting family and friends!
