@ChuckMcManis Oooh, that looks fun!!
@ChuckMcManis LOL curious if that thing will trigger if I open up my box of spare vacuum tubes... do I even want to know?!?! LOL...
@ai6yr I used mine to freak out a friend by holding up to some granite 😃
@ChuckMcManis LOL do I want to know how radiactive my granite kitchen tabletop is?!?! (probably not, LOL). Or my bathroom tile? (not granite, but...)
@ai6yr Would likely get a reading from the kitchen countertop. Another acquaintance I know built one (on my recommendation) and backgroun radiation in their house was way higher than it should be. Turns out they had sealed all of the vents to their house foundation, "To keep out rats", and started collecting Radon instead.
@ChuckMcManis Yeah, I worry about that a bit in the house here, have insulated and sealed it, but we're not in radon country (fortunately).
@ChuckMcManis @ai6yr Aranet have a radon monitor if you want something less diy. I’m sure there are other alternatives as well
@ai6yr @ChuckMcManis @BenAveling I got the Aranet radon monitor.
Pros: Easy, fast, realtime reading with 30-day average, no mailing in to a lab.
Cons: Now I know what my radon levels are like, lol.
@ai6yr @ChuckMcManis Last year my husband went through a series of cancer treatments that causes him to be extremely radioactive for a short duration. He immediately bought a geiger counter, because he's a nerd. After a treatment, I turned it on and tossed it towards him across the bed, and it started screaming mid-air, and we knew then that the device worked!

@Tamami @ChuckMcManis 😂

"Honey, you're just glowing tonight!"

@Tamami @ai6yr @ChuckMcManis

We went on a tour of the Kennedy Space Flight Center, which drove you in buses towards the VAB. The driver asked everyone before we set off if anyone had any radiation therapy recently, because his last bus was pulled over by security at the second gate!

They had a lot of 'splainin' to do.

@czarbucks @ai6yr @ChuckMcManis We were worried that he may trigger some security device at the airport. It never happened. Makes you wonder.
@ChuckMcManis @ai6yr damn you, this is SO COOL and I absolutely do not need it.
@iris @ai6yr This could be my life motto

@ai6yr
I'm doing my best to live a life in which I do not need a Geiger counter and you show me this?

*flips table

@bruce I mean, my hand is hovering over the "buy kit" button LOL

@ai6yr @bruce If you build it, you might not be eating Tepco's waste from now-permitted Fukushima radioactive water tank dumps into the Pacific.

Cheer up! Fukushima will stop polluting seafood in only about 10,000 years or so.

I think it's a worthwhile project, given our horrible politicians, and the many potential other Tepcos awaiting environmental disasters, the likes of which our politicians and the billionaires who own them keep eagerly creating through wars and climate destruction, as though they'd like to see us all left on a smoldering planet, while they live the high life in the clouds of Venus or in Elon Muskland, aka Mars.

If they think they will survive any longer there, I take comfort in the fact that these are the very people destroying life on Earth so that they can party with the next Epstein.

Besides, which of the billionaires will be tasked with cleaning the septic tanks?

@steter @ai6yr

> Besides, which of the billionaires will be tasked with cleaning the septic tanks?

I can think of a few I'd like to nominate.
