Flipboard continues to be just a ridiculous excuse for a company. A simple web middleman offering no value whatsoever, only hassle.

@brianstorms

These accounts are pretty useful on the Fediverse, they let people follow publications that haven't joined Mastodon etc yet. The links in the posts go directly to the publications' websites, they don't pass through Flipboard.

Also they do theoretically let publications interact with people, Flipboard accounts federate in both directions.

@FediFollows

That all may be, but my previous statement stands.

@FediFollows @TidBITS I think we've outlasted every Internet-only tech publication that predated TidBITS in 1990.

@adamengst

Congrats! 👏 What was the first platform it was on? An email list?

@FediFollows The very first distribution was BCC in email from an IBM mainframe at Cornell. That crashed a Navy VAX, so we moved it to Usenet News. Eventually, first someone at Rice University, hosted it on their LISTSERV platform. https://tidbits.com/1994/04/18/tidbits-history/ and follow along with https://tidbits.com/series/tidbits-history/
TidBITS History - TidBITS

The first issue of TidBITS is dated 16-Apr-90. I sit here, four years later, working on our 222nd issue, and think about all that has changed and all that has remained the same
