Workers completed the main excavation of the Brenner Base Tunnel between Austria and Italy that will eventually become a high-speed rail line linking north and south Europe. The Brenner Base Tunnel, which is being billed as the world's longest underground rail connection, is a centrepiece of the EU's drive to shift freight off the roads and onto rail, to cut pollution and boost European trade.

@eunews

Looking forward to it!

I traveled along the old train route this August, and the view was spectacular - but I wouldn't mind shaving off some time from the journey, either.

@eunews Wenn nur #Bayern und Markus #Söder mitmachen würden, dann könnte man sagen "The Brenner Base Tunnel, which is being billed as the world's longest underground rail connection, is a centrepiece of the EU's drive to shift freight off the roads and onto rail, to cut pollution and boost European trade."
@eunews I see someone has practiced waving a flag. The others didn't :-)

Photo description (possible alt text):

Four smiling workers in reflective safety gear standing in an archway broken right through a rock face. They are waving flags and looking very happy. Broken rock and heavy equipment in an arched tunnel behind them. Italian, EU, and Austrian flags.

@eunews

@clew @eunews And the EU flag. 🇪🇺 it's just that only the guy with the Italian flag practiced proper waving.
