Hey any #waterKefir nerds on here?
I've got some desiccated grains to start but unclear how. Looking for the laziest/simplest way possible. Not fancy beverage just probiotic fizz.
Instructions say 4 cup sugar water for 3 days to reconstitute/activate, then toss sugar water, and give it new sugar water to start brewing.
🤔Why throw out first batch of liquid instead of just keep brewing?
🤔And/or why reconstitute in 4c of liquid just to toss instead of smaller amount for rehydrate/activate?
@vlrny you don't need to throw it out. I keep mine in a quart jar and feed them enough sugar that the bottom of the jar is coated. Maybe 1/4 inch of sugar. That keeps them going for a while.
@werringworlds ok. So once I get them in the liquid I can just let them keep brewing past the reconstituting? That makes more sense than the additional sugar water cycle.
My aim is to get it brewing continuously in a big bottle, pour off and drink a bit each day, top up the sugar water as needed.
@vlrny Yup. Just make sure to keep giving them sugar water and you're good. If you ever need to stop, stick the jar in the fridge with fresh sugar water and just change it out every few months. The only water I would discard is when changing it after being in the fridge for a while.
@werringworlds thanks! This is all super helpful perspective.
Everything seems to be going well so far. Have strange happy fizzy thing to drink. :)
