How the fuck do bsky users live with a 300 character limit
I fill up 300 characters just talking normally let alone ranting
@julia I have a conspiracy theory that it's made on purpose to force users to make more posts which would boost statistics
I have 0 proof or reason to believe that but idc
@MarkAssPandi @julia I think it makes sense to me
@MarkAssPandi @julia also 500 char on Mastodon was crippling lol, 300 is poverty
@[email protected] @julia @MarkAssPandi in Unicode civilization, nobody wants to use their characters on meaningless filler. I used to be in Unicode Poverty. I lived in one of the worst neighborhoods: Twitter. I remember it like it was yesterday, with only 140 characters per post. it was awful. since then, they've renovated the place and now all the Twitter residents get 280 characters; twice as much as when I was down there. But this is still abysmally low. One level up is Bluesky. it's barely an improvement over Twitter's 280. They could've built Bluesky in a Rich Unicode Neighborhood, but they didn't. I don't know why, but they built it right next to Twitter, tip-toeing right in the Unicode Poverty Line, at exactly 300 characters. when I was living in Unicode Twitter , I was given a fastpass out of that hellhole. I ascended straight to the heavens of Sharkey. here, in this comfy Upper Middle Class Unicode Neighborhood, I have a character limit of 8192. that's why you're hearing me ramble on and on and on. I am the most powerful shitposter in all of Unicode civilization. far from the Unicode Poverty Line, those bluesky users can only dream of having what I'm having.
@sodiboo @julia @MarkAssPandi thank you for this beautiful post
@MarkAssPandi @julia i think the obvious reason is that it's literally just twitter and twitter has a 280 character limit

if anything they're being generous for not setting it to the old limit (140 characters)
@julia they start talking like mastodon users
@julia okay it’s not quite fair, bluesky does a good job collapsing their threads and there’s also no CW
@julia i have a character limit of like 20000 but i type like a mastosoc user anyway because I have the attention span of a toddler and hit send before finishing my thought and then repeat that like 4 times with followup replies to myself
@lea @julia tbh, because I think faster than I type, and then after sending remember that I forgot something
@julia even the standard mastodon 500 character limit boggles me a little. I feel like I can’t breath let alone hope to make a salient point in such small spaces. 300 would be madness.

@julia
And this depends on the language! 300 characters in english is... well, up to this sentence I already used 144 characters for this reply. 300 characters in german is basically "Good morning, how are you?" (except for northern germany, they can put entire conversations in under 100 characters when you ignore the nonverbal grunting noises and silent looks).

And now imagine japanese or chinese bluesky: 300 characters there can be 300 words... 🤯

By coping about it and pretending that nothing is worth reading past 300 characters

Or using the "take screenshot of longer text you actually wanted to write and write it in the alt text"

@julia I just don’t talk much. I like short, concise sentences.
