watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in SHALL WE DANCE; taking note on what i see from the inside of the skirt that’s keeping it so flowy and bouncy.

also, had no idea Desi Arnaz makes an appearance with his band.

i love that they thought they had to get married to get divorced and for Petrov to go on with his ―and i quote― “gay bachelor life”.

it’s amazing how we have these records of how the meaning of a word changed within 30-40 years.

🎶 The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me 🎶

the writing is so good in this movie.

these #RogersAstaire movies were all about word plays and misunderstandings that hit you out of left field and make you laugh out loud for reals.

call me corny, but i enjoy these early 20th century comedies.

OMG this movie is pre-code. the ballerina in this duet looks like she’s half naked (her leotard is flesh-toned)

NIGHT AND DAY is my favorite Cole Porter song. Rogers and Astaire dance it so splendidly.

also, y’all know the “jazz hands” joke, a reference to Bob Fosse’s coreography? after watching a few of her movies, i think we can confidently talk about “Ginger hands”; when she does slow turns but has to look up to the camera even if she isn’t looking at it.

Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers - Night And Day, The Gay Divorcee, 1934

the best thing in this movie is the fake gigolo Tonetti. he never ever fails to crack me up. Eric Rhodes’ performance is so sincere his cluelessness borders on pure, unadulterated innocence… if it weren’t for the fact he’s there to stage a moment of adultery so she can get a divorce.

BTW this actually seems to have been a thriving side hustle for UK seaside hoteliers.

The Gay Divorcee (1934) -- Tonetti arrives.

the worst thing ―to the point of cringe― is how hard they tried to make a thing out of this awful “The Continental” song.

i enjoy the ridiculousness of it all

Impressive performance, a *lot* of words to keep in time with the tune.
