Was 1983. Strangely enough, my boyfriend at Georgetown was spending six months in Taipei so I had a travel companion. Very difficult to operate a Visa there at that time, coming from Japan, but I had a former roommate’s family to help. Went to Hong Kong then Singapore next. My research fellowship requirement was that I circumnavigate the northern or southern hemisphere 🌍 in 16 months. Incredibly fortunate student, but I had to present my findings to the UN, knock-kneed.
