The web browser is a legitimately powerful force for human freedom and that is why the VCs are trying to destroy it https://infosec.exchange/@mttaggart/115226507937120105

Yet another reason to stop using Chrome: Gemini is coming right into the browser, including the address bar ("Omni bar") by default. These features are computationally expensive at scale, privacy-destroying, and just plain annoying. https://blog.google/products/chrome/chrome-reimagined-with-ai/

Social media was one step in de-democratizing the web because if you made something on your website, and posted it on your social media, the social media companies could bury those links in favor of posts that keep users corralled on a site they control. The meaning of the new "Agentic AI" browsers is that even if you can get people to visit your website, a corporation will be removing whatever you wrote or created and constructing in its place something else that suits their interests better

@mcc Well... if it can be de-democratised, it can probably be redemocratised.

It seems to me that Google has been pushing really hard for Javascript, which is a relatively troublesome way of doing things, and has been refusing to update other ways of doing things... so our answer is probably to avoid Javascript and unleash sites which emphasise Other (less exploitable) Standards.

And to craft a browser that implements them...

@mcc this is, again, one of those things that nobody will pay attention to. Where everybody will brush this off as "that's never going to happen" or "well, we would notice".

And in 5 years everyone will be like "why did nobody warn us?!" or "who could possibly have foreseen this?!"

And in 10 years everyone will be saying "d'uh of COURSE this is happening. It's kinda obvious and normal! Why would it be any other way."
