For whatever reason, the topics of buying old phones and going caseless have popped up this week, right after I bought a new-in-box iPhone 13 mini, so it’s past time for me to address that. And yes, it is the exact same model, color, and capacity I already had. Why? It was meant to be my new phone to let my wife take my old phone. Instead, I jumped directly to giving her the new phone in my old case.

Why new in box? I’m pretty certain my 13 mini is in better shape than any refurb I could buy without knowing it was bought and never used. Why not wait for the 17? There’s no 17 mini. What I want is what Steve Jobs introduced: a tiny tablet phone that fits in hand and in pocket. If I can’t work the phone with one hand and slide it back into my phone pocket, I don’t want it. Maybe I’ll need the bigger screen in five years, but for now, I can still read text on my mini without reading glasses.

I do have a new case on order, but until it gets here, I’m going caseless, and it’s fine. Holding hard edged glass and metal doesn’t hold any allure for me. I am going a different direction with the new case, and we’ll see if my wife decides to take it for herself. More on that when it arrives.

My unintentional caseless experience finished today when my new Live Edge case from Carved arrived, and it is exquisite, a unique case crafted from wood and resin that is the exact piece shown in its photo… almost. The black MagSafe ring was added post-photo and is partly visible from the outside. I was initially disappointed until I realized the resin was translucent, which means part of my red iPhone with silver logo can be seen through the case. That’s an unforeseen bonus AFAIC.

This is the third wood-based iPhone case or skin I’ve ever used, but the first from Carved, which I’d been eyeing for a long while but had considered it too high-end for my needs. Not this time.
BTW, they do have cases for the upcoming 17 models on the store. Worth a look if you want a work of art protecting your iPhone.
