Okay, some really bad news but also a suggestion for a way forward. The Guppe groups domain name was sold by their registrar before they could renew it. This means all Guppe groups are broken, and their web addresses point to a spam blog 😞 However, there is another group provider called FediGroups, you can find out more on their site: ➡️ https://about.fedigroups.social/home FediGroups has features that Guppe never had, including private groups. (More info about #Guppe situation: https://github.com/immers-space/guppe/issues/118 )

@FediFollows Is there a reason to promote FediGroups over Lemmy communities? Why not use what's already established?

They're intended for slightly different purposes.

The "Threadiverse" is more of a Reddit-style discusion platform whereas groups are mainly providing a more powerful alternative to hashtags that federates more widely.

@FediFollows The purpose is to be in touch with a specific community and share things within that group, so I don't think the purpose is different at all actually.
Imho groups are the worse implementation to solve this, because they don't provide the opportunity to discuss topics independently in different threads and every answer will be in your timeline. Guppe was created before Lemmy existed so I don't think continuing and promoting a legacy solution should be the way to go. Especially since this will just again create two smaller parallel communities instead of a big one.

There are lots of different ways to be in touch with communities, from blogs to forums to microblogging to instant messaging groups to hashtags etc etc etc.

They all have slightly different purposes though which is why they co-exist?

@FediFollows I just still don't see how groups and Lemmy communities are different purposes. They even work the same way by mentioning the community/group name in a (Mastodon) post.

@daniel @FediFollows There can be a group for my local community but I will not create a lemmy community for it. Mastodon groups are more of fb groups replacement while lemmy communities are more of subreddit replacement.

Groups work best if you want to have a hashtag that federates everywhere rather than just near you. One usecase I can think of is tooting along with an event, such as a TV or radio programme...
