"[Substack] announced that all writers would be required to offer Apple’s in-app purchase (IAP) payment option. That means that Apple will be collecting a 30% fee for all subscriptions purchased on Substack via IAP."

This is what happens when you depend on a walled garden inside a walled garden

Substack just killed the creator economy

RIP

Big Desk Energy
@quillmatiq what a headline, the entire creator economy killed because Nazis have a new audience to sell subscriptions to

@quillmatiq Wait, Apple’s IAPs are what kills Substack creators? Not Substack’s repeated implicit and explicit promotion of Nazis?

Substack’s “Nazi problem” won’t go away after push notification apology

@rosyna @quillmatiq why is it one or the other? Why can’t taking advantage of small creators and Nazis both be bad?
@quillmatiq once again I remind everyone that WordPress, Ghost and others can do everything Substack does without a walled garden, worse tech engine and without a leadership that amplifies hate

@quillmatiq all platforms, each one - without fail, no exceptions will enshittify eventually. Is is but a question of when and how.

With substack, the writing was on the wall from day one for anyone around long enough. It’s awful for those writers and journalists and I hope they find a way to move forward from it with minimal damage.
