This week in #geoweirdness it's time for the next edition in our series about Southeast Asia.
Today we're diving into another country with a rich history and surprising geographical features: π»π³ Vietnam!
1/
2/ Vietnam π»π³ is a land of incredible ethnic diversity. While the Kinh (or Viet) people make up most of the population, the country officially recognizes 53 other ethnic minority groups.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_Vietnam
Below is a map of Vietnam with the main groups
4/ The Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 was a brief war between China π¨π³ and Vietnam π»π³ along the border, which began as a result of Vietnamβs invasion of Cambodia π°π in 1978, targeting the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Vietnamese_War
The border was the site of frequent, small-scale military skirmishes until 1991.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Vietnamese_conflicts_(1979%E2%80%931991)
These localized clashes, often over disputed territory, continued for over a decade before being officially resolved in a 1999 treaty.
5/ Vietnam's coastline includes two contested archipelagos, the Paracel Islands and the Spratly Islands, which are strategically important for global shipping and are a source of geopolitical tension.
The Paracel Islands are claimed by Vietnam π»π³, China π¨π³, and Taiwan πΉπΌ, with China currently in control despite Vietnam's historical claims dating back to the 17th century.
In 1974 this dispute also lead to conflict between China and Vietnam
6/ Further south the Spratly Islands have an even more complex situation, with claims from Vietnam π»π³, China π¨π³, Taiwan πΉπΌ, the Philippines π΅π, Malaysia π²πΎ, and Brunei π§π³.
These islands are believed to hold significant oil and gas reserves, and all claimants have established military outposts, with China building artificial islands to reinforce its claims.
7/ Vietnam π»π³ is home to a tripoint where the borders of Vietnam, Laos π±π¦, and Cambodia π°π meet.
The actual trilateral border marker is difficult to reach, pictured and detailed brilliantly in this article:

8/ Vietnam π»π³ was a French π«π· colony.
French colonialism, which began in the mid-19th century and lasted until the 1954 Geneva Accords, had a huge impact on Vietnam. The French divided the country into three administrative regionsβTonkin (North), Annam (Central), and Cochinchina (South)βwhich weakened national unity.
Below is a map showing the timeline of the French expansion in the area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Indochina
9/ π«π· France's colonial economic policies created a divide between wealthy landowners and landless peasants. These tensions, along with the struggle for independence, led to the 1954 Geneva Accords.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Geneva_Conference
The agreement established a temporary partition line along the 17th parallel, creating North and South Vietnam (as well as Cambodia π°π and Laos π±π¦)and setting the stage for the later Vietnam War.
10/ After the US πΊπΈ pulled out of the Vietnam War the North eventually overwhelmed the South, and on 30 April 1975 Saigon was captured
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Saigon
The city was subsequently renamed Ho Chi Minh City (often abbreviated as HCMC) joining the list of major cities like Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Karl Marx Stadt named after communist leaders
11/ More recently Vietnam π»π³ just (July 2025) underwent a major reorg of its administrative divisions, there are now 28 provinces and 6 independent cities.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam#Administrative_divisions
Because this change is so new, the old ISO VN 3166-2 codes are now out of date https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:VN
12/ That brings our #geoweirdness thread on Vietnam π»π³ to a close, what did we overlook?
