I did not know that many countries in Europe already have mandatory conscription for men (some include women too).

@darnell Austria did not only debate it "every now and then", they had a referendum on it in 2013. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Austrian_conscription_referendum
One could argue that mostly people not directly affected (anymore) by their decision decided to keep it.
