I am sure there are lots of flaws with this idea but it would be SO GREAT to have a gov.uk equivalent for schools websites, with design patterns and content modules that have been tried and tested so that useful information for parents and students was shared in a findable and consistent way.

GOV.UK - The best place to find government services and information.

There must be thousands of WhatsApp conversations happening up and down the country right now in which the one parent who diligently saved the PDF that got shared in July via some weird Microsoft system is patiently telling everyone which date and time each year group is expected back next week.
I would heartily contend that making school comms more straightforward would be a HUGE productivity gain for parents and carers all over the country, and in many cases would win them back loads more time than a gov.uk wallet or log-in ever will

I'm on holiday by the beach 😌 However due to a terrible miscalculation it turns out that my youngest will unexpectedly be in college the day after we get back and that she has a large amount of coursework to do that she has not started. She is currently doing some A-level biology.

@rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social and local authorities, presenting public information in a clear, consistent manner. Even consistent service naming. Is it a civic amenity site, recycling centre, a Household Recycling Centre, a tip ?
@rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social hell even getting them all on a consistent something dot school dot gov dot UK address would be good.

Exactly this.

My kids secondary school had a perfectly good .sch.uk address but a few years ago decided that was too boring and now have a vanity .school domain instead. The change coincided with a change of head, unsurprisingly.

The .sch.uk sill works, but redirects.

@sheddi @rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social my son's old primary school was on a sch.uk but the secondary school is on an org.uk address. the other secondary school in town is on a sch.uk address some freaking consistency please
@rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social And also for others who have need to know - the number of times, as a school bus driver, I have been left out of the loop, because information for parents is shared on a private part of the school website... even school term dates sometimes (including training days, and some schools even change their minds about these partway through the year).

@rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social seems to me every school individually has to find the resources to develop their own internet presence. It's such a waste of effort!

But then imposing a standard web site is not 'competitive' or allows the school to display it's 'brand strengths ' or some such BS. 🤦‍♀️

I should declare some vested interest as I help maintaining our local primary school site. It's also completely disconnected from their internal systems which come via the council IT supplier. Sigh.
