And that's only how much it costs the federal government. For the majority of guardsmen whose guard pay is less than their day-jobs' pay, it hurts their and their families' household budgets (meaning it also hurts any businesses they might have patronized with the now lost money). It also hurts the employers and coworkers who have make up the slack caused by their absence.
