I went past this area on my way home 30mins after it happened, the police had blocked off the road, so I didn't know what had happened.

This is the second time this year a person has been killed crossing Moreland Rd.

A person hit by a car 60km/h has very little chance of survival and no chance of not receiving life altering injuries.

Police search for driver following fatal hit-and-run north of Melbourne

A man dies in hospital after being struck by a light-coloured SUV in Coburg on Sunday night.

ABC News
I've already had two people contact me this morning to check it wasn't me that died.

The police had blocked off Moreland Rd between Fifth Ave and Fourth Ave last night so I guess it happened there. I marked the nearest signalised pedestrian crossing in green and where the police were in red.

From the article, the car was traveling west and "The vehicle is likely to have visible damage to both its front and passenger side." which means the person was on the south side of the road and probably actually in the bike lane.

The ABC article says the person was crossing while "walking a push bike" but I wouldn't be surprised if they were riding west from the Upfield path and had actually stopped in the bike lane to do a right turn in to Glencarin Ave.

I regularly head west on Moreland Rd from the Upfield path and then make a right turn from the bike lane in to Strathhearn.

Because the bike lane isn't protected and it's a fast and busy road I'm often concerned that a driver will slow and signal they're making a right turn and another car behind them will move in to the bike lane to undertake and not see that I'm in the bike lane waiting to make my turn.

That's really grim. I have ridden down Moreland road, but I avoid it, it's way too fast and dangerous. If I were planning to get to Strathearn Ave from the upfield, I would probably go under Moreland station, along Jessie Street, through John Fawkner car park, to Glencairn and through the laneway or up to Craigrossie. That or cross the rail line at Tinning st and Zig zag up to the ped crossing on Moreland rd and ride along the north footpath.

I wonder how many more deaths they'll need

@jessta
To either protect the bike path or lower the speed limit?
