I took my mom on a bike ride yesterday. 🚲 ✨

The bike is a rental from Adaptive POGOH, a program loosely affiliated with POGOH (Pittsburgh city docked bike rentals) that lends various adapted bikes for taking out on the trail. They have front/back tandems, recumbents, hand-bikes, single-rider adult tricycles, and ultra-low-step bikes. It’s an incredible deal: $5 annual membership gets you unlimited 2-hour rentals.

My mom loves bicycling, and she has decent leg strength, but she doesn’t trust her balance. I initially planned to rent her her own tricycle, but she thought the side-by-side would be funnier. We did get a lot of smiles and positive comments from other folks on the trail, and in retrospect I did more than half of the pedaling (and all of the steering) so this was the right choice for us.
If they had an electric assist tricycle it would have been perfect for her; none of their bikes have e-assist, though, so I’m guessing there’s a logistical or funding hurdle there, not simply a lack of desire.
(The staff said that other cities have similar programs if you know where to look; they particularly cited Minneapolis, Detroit, and Hamilton ON as inspiration.)
@lea Wonderful! I didn’t know the bike share had any tandems! That looks like great fun!
@bruce Yeah! It’s only through the Adaptive program but they have a really cool assortment. I encourage you to check it out!
