Dressed in camouflage fatigues, National Guard troops patrolled areas of Washington Thursday, dispatched by President Donald Trump to police what he has called "out of control crime" in the city.

2/2 What it means, when they "sweep" homeless people: read the personal notes from this project:
"As homelessness has surged to record levels in the US, cities are increasingly removing or “sweeping” tents or entire encampments of people living outdoors.
Cities say they carry out these clearings humanely with the goal of getting people off the street. But they often result in people's belongings being thrown away. [...] these actions create a cycle of hardship."

Swept Away

People say having their possessions — from birth certificates to loved ones’ ashes — taken in “sweeps” traumatizes them, exacerbates health issues and undermines efforts to find housing and get or keep a job.

3/3 "Estimates show that taxpayers are spending over $400,000 a day for #Trump to use the #DC #NationalGuard for photo ops. Why can they find money for that but not for housing and help? We need housing and support, not handcuffs and a military takeover of D.C. People displaced today don’t know where they will go and are now worse off due to Trump’s reckless actions.”

Homeless residents forcibly displaced and property destroyed as Trump increases control of D.C.

Last night, police from the FBI, Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department roamed D.C., particularly in areas near the White House where homeless people live.
