"Stop outsourcing the discomfort of thinking" is such a simple and strong statement against so much of what's going on in the world right now
grabbed that from a comment I saw in a Medlife Crisis video I'm watching, no idea if it's sourced to the video or somewhere else.
@Lunaphied he said it himself near the end of the video, not sure if he too was quoting but felt like rohin just said it in the flow of his speech unplanned. quite nicely put either way
If anyone is looking for recommendations to improve their genuine abilities in this regard, I'd personally recommend reading Thinking Fast and Slow it's an excellent book

@Lunaphied my gosh yes

Though I was reading my copy and it started to drag in the middle. And I don't support everything the author has published, but critical support for that book

I am trying to break my Internet addiction because the Internet really incentivizes "System 1" thinking - See something, like it, click it, move on. No greater plan, no organization, no critical thinking. It's news and then it's old news. It works for propaganda but there has to be something deeper in the pipeline

@babble_endanger @Lunaphied
Sounds like the addiction is specifically to social media. There is a difference...
@pteryx sure I'm not exactly addicted to Wikipedia

@babble_endanger yeah I haven't actually had a chance to look into the authors beyond the book but I can vouch for that book at least. In fact I was a little surprised that I felt like I could give it an uncritical recommendation, most things I read of that nature are too nuanced with issues to recommend generally.

In that book's terminology I'd say my original post could be phrased as "You must learn to start using your System 2 thinking actively"

@Lunaphied is it valid to say "my headmate is reading it"?
@Lunaphied It's very Kant. "Have the courage to use your own mind."
@Lunaphied I would write a reply, but I just got rate limited ☚ī¸đŸ¤ˇâ€â™‚ī¸đŸ¤Ŗ
What Is Enlightenment? - Wikipedia

@Lunaphied Staying with discomfort instead of escaping into the false comfort of distraction - working on it.
@Lunaphied Reminds me of Ze Frank's "thinking so you don't have to" tag line from The Show.
@Lunaphied giving a task bunny 50 bucks to figure this post out for me
@Lunaphied This fits my maga siblings-in-law to a T. They have fully outsourced their thinking to FoxNews and corporate America, with predictable results.
@Lunaphied Except that we literally don't need men and don't care what men think. So there's that.

@Lunaphied I heard our Director of IT proudly admit to outsourcing his thinking to an AI to compose email today. Not really surprising especially after jokingly dissing our entire division earlier in his presentation.

He must've asked his chatbot friend how to make enemies of at least a third of the company and for once it gave him a correct answer.

@Lunaphied Also
Have some confidence in your own judgment. Don't be easily gaslighted.
Surround yourself with trustworthy people who can reliably tell you if you've gone down a rabbit hole.

@Lunaphied Hmm. The racists, transphobes, etc I yell at in my extended family definitely feel they are superior, actively thinking, on the side of truth and other nonsense.

I could easily imagine them saying something like that, along with "Do your own research".

Thanks for the book recommendation.

@Lunaphied

Thinking is hard...

Deciding is hard...

So much easier to "outsource" those hard things.
@Lunaphied
Of course, this brings up the question: should I just boost this or say it in my own words so I'm not outsourcing my thinking to you?😉

Elon already spoke about merge with AI.

We're all could merge in to BORG hive (or Strogg)
I just recommend you to build your own personal DIY FLOSS OpenHardware Quantum teleporter, before that happen.

Social media became kind of control machines, where readers addicted to be controlled. Posts do mandate certain emotions, reactions. People with impaired willpower, pfc, are victims. #neuroscience

What is it about these right-wing fuckheads that like to reference
Star Trek and Star Wars, then regularly demonstrate that they don't understand the underlying themes of those universes???
