"As an IT guy who knows how computers work, I’ve got a very smart home. My lights are all controlled by physical switches on the wall. Heating and cooling, switches. The oven, switches. Computers and phones don’t talk to any of it. We have a printer, but it’s a Brother laser, so we only need a baseball bat for it, not a shotgun. This is the smartest home architecture, and I recommend it."

Hack a smart home with a calendar invite! And Google Gemini

Pivot to AI

I see this continues to be boosted, and the quote is certainly delicious 🙂

I'll encourage everybody to also follow the link below, detailing how a Gemini-based smart home may be penetrated by a calendar invite. And yes, smart homes are often superfluous, but even more, ridiculously so is "AI".

#ButlerianJihadNow

@fanden my living room has two lamps. My wife's lamp, which is controlled by yelling at Alexa repeatedly, and my lamp, which I reach over and turn on and off.

@bit101 We have an old IR remote for the stereo, that's our TOTL airborne thingamajig.

Given that the ventilation shafts in our apartment building carry neighbours' voices quite clearly, I wouldn't care to try any voice activated gadgets 🤣

@fanden Nothing voice activated, but we have about 13 lights in the living room and having them connected to home assistant makes them much more manageable. We also use it for other things like night lights and signalling (for instance, the alarm is on, so one lamp is red).

And then I have some integrations in place to "fix" the surround receiver / TV integration, so it turns on on the right source and turns off with the TV - stuff like that, which should work over HDMI, but is just broken.

But again, this is home assistant. It's on the internal network which is not listening on the internet at all. And while they insist on adding AI capabilities, they have no business on my network.

Nå, du skrev også dansk. Men jeg gider ikke skrive ovenstående igen. :)

@Gjoel Citatet afsporede måske humlen i linket, at man kan få adgang til andres Gemini-drevne smart home med en kalenderinvitation... Men der er også en god pointe i, at holde hjemmet så lav praktisk som muligt.
