Old App Revival!

During the past fifteen years or so, I've built or contributed to dozens of iOS apps, for dozens of clients and several employers. During that time, I've also built and published several apps of my own, mostly games, to try out various technologies and put some ideas into the world.

Sometimes over the years, fully-functional apps that hadn't been updated in a few years were removed from the App Store by Apple as part of their continuous work in keeping things fresh. Apple always warned me several months in advance of each of these changes, but since these apps weren't a priority for me, and brought me no revenue, I didn't bother updating them in time, and away they went. However, some of these apps were truly missed (by me, at least), so I spent some time this summer

doing some long overdue housekeeping in my old Xcode projects, and submitting new builds to Apple.

All of these are free to download, with no in-app purchases and no ads. Some for iOS, some for both iOS and tvOS, and all of them also work on Macs powered by M1/2/3/4/etc, too. All of these apps were coded entirely with my human brain and hands; no AI was involved in any part of these. Without further ado, here are a few iOS games of mine, back from the dead!

TextShooter (iOS, 2013) https://apps.apple.com/se/app/textshooter/id814735204

This is probably the simplest of the bunch. It was originally created for inclusion in one of my books, "Beginning iOS 7 Development", to showcase how to build a game with SpriteKit, and now it lives on! And the source code is still available. https://github.com/jnutting/TextShooter

‎TextShooter

‎A deceptively simple shooter that will put your tapping to the test. When these X's start falling, you'll need every finger you've got just to stay alive! No IAP, no ads, just good old-fashioned shooting. The source code for this game, and full description of how to go about building something lik…

Pits of Death (iOS, tvOS, 2015) https://apps.apple.com/se/app/pits-of-death/id989109750

This was inspired by a handheld LCD game I had as a kid, which was in turn inspired by an older game called "Hunt the Wumpus". Somewhat frustrating to play, honestly, but I still enjoy the faux-retro color LCD display idea that I came up with. I even created a song to go along with this, which is included only in the tvOS version (and in this video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLM_Lqovlec

‎Pits of Death

‎Pits of Death is a dungeon adventure for iOS and Apple Watch. Explore a network of underground chambers on your quest to slay the dragon. But watch out for the pits! Pits of Death features graphics inspired by electronic handheld games of the 80s, and gameplay that tests your logic and your nerve.…

@JackNutting I love that promo video!
@blakespot Thanks! It was fun to make. I managed to convince then-colleague @mikeburns to pretend he was one of the many, many players reacting to the game (so they wouldn't all just be me)
