@alexwild I’m fascinated by pavement ants. It’s boggling to me that a tiny queen would say “Build a nest in that patch of soil over there? Nah, instead I’m going to dig down in the narrow join between two slabs of sidewalk in this huge expanse of concrete.” I suppose an impenetrable roof on one’s nest is a good compromise for such a seemingly inhospitable location.
