#CanfrancEstación

... Has been converted into a five star hotel. I'm happy this saved the building from destruction. You're still allowed to *pass* through the lobby, and you can make reservations at the restaurants in and in front of the hotel. So it's a compromise I guess...

Here are some night shots. Hasta mañana.

#CanfrancEstación - the one with trains - has been relocated behind the historical building in the area of the freight yard, close to the silos. The roof structure blends in with the surrounding buildings. There are - at least in summer - several tours a day about the history of the place.

Now to my big surprise there are - at least at the moment, which is peak summer season - three departures a day of the "Canfranc Express" operated/commercialised by #Alsa with historic cars from AZAFT | ASOCIACIÓN ZARAGOZANA DE AMIGOS DEL FERROCARRIL Y TRANVÍAS https://azaft.org (an expert source tells me).

#ExpresoDeCanfranc seems like a good idea to attract tourists to the idea of getting to Canfranc by train. For the stretch between Zaragoza and Jaca, the bus is more competitive as it cuts through mountains on newly built highways where the train circles around them. But for the Jaca - Canfranc stretch, the train is more pleasant and probably faster. So it makes sense for day tourists to leave their car in Jaca and have a day-by-train experience in Canfranc.

Back to #CanfrancEstación - the building looks now in very good condition, some would say it lacks a bit of patina ;) the surrounding tracks have been taken away and the area is now a park retracing the railway history. It attracts many visitors (on Aug 1st). All restaurants in town were full both for lunch and dinner. A fair amount of French tourists among them.

#CanfrancEstación park presents various items, such as station gates, and coded messages to French officials are subtly passed on 😉 ¡Reapertura ya!

The Iberian gauge tracks have been remodelled and also reach the #SilosDeCanfranc where occasional freight happens (loading french corn 🌽 on trains to Spain) - if someone can confirm this info?

To my great pleasure the entry of the #TunelDeSomport was accessible. It seems the area around was used for the recent modernization works and you can just walk in. I had never been so close to a tunnel entry. Caténaire midi still standing at its exit ...

Here's the official info board for the recent modernization works.

Back to the historical building of #CanfrancEstación - the hall has a nice atmosphere. The French and Spanish crest face each other. Underpasses are sadly closed. There are two carriages outside the station that host Michelin*/gourmet restaurants. I miss things like a historic timetable... Does anyone know where to find one?

#CanfrancEstación Inside the hotel is the restaurant El Internacional with more moderate prices, but still more expensive than surrounding restaurants that feel a bit more OG.

Otherwise a cute discovery was the municipal pool of #Canfranc. Entry is 3.50€, you can order paella 🥘 and the locals play football next door. Sadly we came after closure.

@Moritz_Kleine you went to the mountains and got high. Nice!

Great shots of the plain that the station was built on, itself constructed from the spoil from the tunnel.
