Folks who work around tech ethics of some kind, what advice do you give to students about entering the field?
Most people I work closely with had pretty nonlinear paths into this work, myself included.

My current answer is usually: if you can't find a job that immediately aligns with your values, do your best with what you have. Read. Organize your workplace. Help people around you with whatever extra money you have. If you can, find ways to support people doing work you admire. 🧵

@dylan 5+ years experience in the field and my most important advice: invest time in understanding how building that specific tech actually works.

Too much of "ethics" is abstract advice for a perfect world, but non-actionable for a dev team. Interview devs and project leads, do internships and diy-projects - get your hands dirty as quickly and often as possible so that when the time comes, you know what you're talking about.
